We reached out to A&M Painters because they did our neighbors house and a few others in the community. We hired them to do the Interior and Exterior of our home and paid them nearly 9K to do so. I dealt with Alejandro and his father, Angel. The Exterior paint job was fine, no complaints. However, the interior was another story. First, I provided Angel and his team with a printed chart of the paint colors. It mapped out exactly which room and what color paint was to be used. Needless to say they did not reference my chart and painted my master bathroom the wrong color. It was promptly fixed the next day, however this caused a delay in finishing time. Second, they broke one of my master bathroom light fixtures, which caused them to have to replace them all with new ones. Next, nearly less than a week after completion, the paint on the baseboards, closet and room doors and stairs starting peeling and chipping. I immediately called the owner, Alejandro, to discuss and he had come out twice to ?patch up? the areas but it continued to happen. He informed me that he would send out his Sherwin Williams rep which never happened, and then he went silent. After two months of severe peeling we called another painter, which came highly recommended, to give us an estimate on what it would cost to redo all the baseboards, closet and room doors and stairs in our house. At this time the new painter informed me of what went wrong with our original painters. First he said the painters used the wrong paint. I was told that they used eggshell paint on the stairs, doors and baseboards, instead of using semi gloss which is stronger. He told me eggshell paint is mainly for walls. Also, he informed me that on the staircase, he would use urethane enamel paint and an oil based paint which would make it easier to clean and less likely to scratch. This minor detail cost us another 3K to have redone the correct way. It should not be the consumer's responsibility to inform the painter on which paint to use. They are supposed to be the professionals prepared to make correct on which paint to use. In hindsight, I believe the believe owner knew exactly what the issue was, because something was written all over his face. I just didn't know it at the time. The right thing to do would have been to own up to their professional mistake and correct it.

What to check before you hire

Worth checking yourself
Always confirm credentials and quotes with the business directly before hiring.
Contractor licensing in the US is set by each state (and sometimes the city or county). For electrical, plumbing, HVAC or any major build, confirm the trade is licensed on your state's licensing board before hiring. Unlicensed work where a license is required can void permits and insurance and leave you no recourse.
Ask for a lien waiver as you pay each stage: in most US states an unpaid contractor or subcontractor can place a mechanic's lien on your home even if you already paid the main contractor, and a signed waiver is your protection.
Look for consistent reviews across several named sources, not one polished profile.
