- Ask for a lien waiver as you pay each stage: in most US states an unpaid contractor or subcontractor can place a mechanic's lien on your home even if you already paid the main contractor, and a signed waiver is your protection.
- Ask to see a portfolio of completed work like yours, plus recent references you can contact.
- Check the credentials and registrations that matter for this work, and that they are current.
- Get a written, itemized quote with scope, assumptions and a staged payment schedule.

- Look for NABCEP certification (North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners), the gold-standard US solar credential, plus the required state contractor or electrical license (for example the CSLB C-46 solar or C-10 electrical license in California).
- A solar install needs a building/electrical permit, an inspection, and utility interconnection approval (Permission to Operate): confirm the installer handles all of it.
- Understand the deal, cash, loan, lease, or PPA, since leases/PPAs put a lien-like UCC filing on your home and can complicate resale; get the production estimate and the warranty (panels, inverter, AND workmanship/roof penetrations).
- Confirm general liability and workers' compensation, and a roof-leak warranty for the penetrations.
Warning signs of a rogue contractor
- Door-to-door, high-pressure sales promising 'free solar' or a guaranteed eliminated bill.
- Vague about whether it's a loan, lease, or PPA, and about the long-term cost or escalator.
- Not NABCEP certified or a licensed electrician, or skips the permit and interconnection.
- A huge deposit before permits are approved, and no roof-penetration warranty.
