  • Confirm professional liability (errors & omissions) insurance: it covers design mistakes that would otherwise cost you on site.
  • Agree the scope and fee structure (fixed, a percentage of construction cost, or hourly) in writing, and ask to see a portfolio of comparable, permitted projects.
